John Burton Milne, 1930-2005

MONTE VISTA ó John Burton Milne, 75, of Monte Vista, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1930, in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., to John C. and Dorothy (Burton) Milne and moved to Monte Vista in 1932 with his parents.

With an exceptionally high aptitude score of 145, Burt is a graduate of Rio Grande County High School, a member of the National Honor Society and one of the youngest MENSA Society members. He served his country in the Army before attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. With a tour of duty in Korea and two years of college complete, he returned to Monte Vista.

Burtís house was not only home to three birth children of his own and two adopted children, but dozens of foster children as well. He served on the Monte Vista High School board and the Library board and gave effortlessly for years to the food bank and adopted families in need during the cold Monte Vista winters through the First Presbyterian Church of Monte Vista.

Burt is a member of the American Legion and the Monte Vista Elks lodge. Milne Produce, Produce Distributors and Mountain King Potatoes have been all Burtís labors of love and his result of a lifetime of hard work.

Burt loved to travel with his wife and kids and has seen the world over from Jerusalem to Russia, South Africa, New Zealand and back.

His parents, John and Dorothy, and his wife Mary preceded him in death. Survivors include his five children, Dottie (Stan) Harlan, John Milne, Debbie (Leo) Basquez, Tom (Tina) Milne and David (Catherine) Milne; along with seven grandchildren.

Funeral Services to honor and celebrate his life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at the First Presbyterian Church of Monte Vista, with burial following in the Monte Vista Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice del Valle, in care of Strohmayerís Funeral Home in Monte Vista, which is directing arrangements.
