G. Thomas Hawk, age 84 passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home February 27, 1999 at Delta, Utah. He was born March 22, 1914 to Elmer O. Hawk and Lula Amanda McClellan Hawk in Del Norte, Colorado. He married Margaret Weir November 5, 1933 at Monte Vista, Colorado.
After the death of his father and older brother in 1915 Tom's mother went to work for Forrest Nelson, a San Luis Valley farmer and rancher, whom she subsequently married. When attending high school, Tom worked as a janitor in a local bank, making headlines when he and a teller were held hostage during a robbery. He graduated from Center, Colorado high school in 1932. During the depression Tom worked at a variety of jobs, including as a grocer in Center, Colorado. In 1942 he became manager of the Monte Vista, Colorado Safeway Store, retiring in 1973. In 1998 Tom was presented a special award for 50 as a Mason. During his many years in Monte Vista he was active in community and civic organizations, including 45 years as a member of the Monte Vista chapter of Kiwanis. Tom was also a member of the El Jabel Shine for 25 years. Tom was a member of the Methodist Church of Monte Vista, for many years. Tom and Margaret moved to Delta, Utah in November 1996 to be near family.
Tom is survived by his wife Margaret, Delta, Utah: Sons; David (Caroll) Hawk, Delta, Utah: Douglas (Jean) Hawk, Denver, Colorado: Grandchildren; David Hawk Jr. of Washington, Utah, Daniel Hawk, of Herriman, Utah, Donna Madsen, of Clinton, Utah, Dustin Hawk, of Herriman, Utah. Darla Trendler, of Mesa Arizona; John Hawk, Aaron Hawk both of Denver, Colorado. 18 Great Grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday March, 3, 1999, in Monte Vista, Colorado. Burial was in the Monte Vista Cemetery.
